Understanding Sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower spine into the pelvis and down the legs into the feet. The nerve can become pinched due to injury or a spinal problem. This nerve impingement leads to the characteristic symptoms that can occur anywhere along the length of the nerve.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica often affects only one side of the body and tends to worsen with long periods of sitting. Individuals often have leg pain that be searing pain, a tingling sensation or a burning feeling. Hip pain is common. Sharp pain may occur when standing up. The discomfort may run down the back of the leg into the foot and toes. Discomfort may come and go, or it may be continuous. The individual may have numbness or weakness in the affected leg.

Causes of Sciatica

Stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal, can lead to compression of the sciatic nerve and resulting discomfort. Muscle spasms can sometimes be the cause of sciatica. Pregnancy can place pressure on the sciatic nerve. Degenerative disc disease can also lead to sciatic nerve compression. Spondylolisthesis, in which one disc slips on top of another, can also compress the nerve.

Chiropractic Care Can Help Sciatica Symptoms

Your Cincinnati chiropractor will take a medical history, examine your spine and discuss the extent and frequency of your symptoms. If needed, x-rays or other tests will be done to determine the source of the nerve problem. Your chiropractor in Cincinnati will then design a care plan for your unique needs. Treatment may include spinal manipulation to relieve pressure on nerves, heat and ice to reduce inflammation of the nerve, as well as exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles. Massage therapy can help to relieve pressure on nerves and relieve pain.
