Conditions Treated with Spinal Decompression

There several conditions that can be treated with spinal decompression, including sciatica, bulging disc, herniated disc, and degenerative disc disease.

Sciatica

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or pinched. This nerve travels from the lower back into the hip and both legs. Sciatica can cause back pain, numbness, shooting pain, and difficulty walking.

Bulging and Herniated Discs

Bulging and herniated discs can cause sharp pain in the back, hips, or legs. You may also have numbness in these parts of the body.

A herniated disc occurs when the outer covering of a spinal disc cracks, allowing the inner jelly like material to protrude through the crack. A bulging disc happens when the disc begins to sag and seems to bulge out from the spine.

Degenerative Disc

As you age, the cartilage in the spinal joints begin to wear out. This can cause pain and numbness in the spine and other areas of your body. You may also have stiffness. Spinal decompression can help allow nutrients and blood to flow into the discs and can help improve alignment. This won't cure degenerative disc disease but it can help relieve the symptoms.

How Spinal Decompression Works

Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine. This creates negative pressure which can help allow bulging discs to retract back into their proper position. The procedure can also help sciatica if it was caused by a disc being out of place.

What to Expect During Spinal Decompression Treatment

Spinal decompression can be performed using a motorized table, like the DRX9000. You'll lay down on the table and you will be placed in a harness.

The treatment takes about 30 minutes. You shouldn't experience much pain during treatment. Instead, you may feel a stretching or pulling sensation.

After the treatment, you may have some mild soreness, similar to starting a new exercise routine. Our chiropractor may recommend other treatments, including exercises, chiropractic adjustments, and more.
